Thank you for finding me here at PHuset. I’m Joseph, an Irish therapist that works in English with adults and young adults.
How I understand psychological problems
My area of specialist focus is to consider relational needs – the safety and security to be found in a sense of belonging, of getting along, of community and ties that bind, of a sense of home, plans with loved one(s) for a common future. To be human is to be a social and relational being – to quote some poetry, ‘no man is an island.’ Our sense of self is reflected back to us through our closest relationships. Trouble within them can impact our self-esteem, how we value ourselves, and our general peace of mind.
My practice then primarily focuses on helping people work their way through relationship problems and their effects. Such problems might arise either in your intimate relationship, or among connections with family, close friends, or colleagues. Exploring them reveals so much about who we are and how we understand ourselves.
Who am I? A little about my approach to what I do
In my practice, I aim to bring a steady, gentle warmth and calmness to the room. This means compassionate, gentle professionalism that’s neither clinical nor cold. Relationship problems typically need a trustworthy, reliable, sensitive presence at a time when you might be doubting yourself or have limited faith in others. I’ll be alongside you as we work through it, together.
I also work closely with identity crises, LGBTQIA+ life, cultural integration, work stress and burnout, and the experience of depression. I work in a relational way, which means I value and respect getting to know you as a unique, complex individual rather than some set of ‘symptoms’ from a textbook. It is critically important to understand your world. Psychological solutions have to make sense within the context of your life and how you engage with living, they have to respond to you. Whether you require safe exploration of painful experiences, pragmatic problem-solving, enhanced psychological skills, or just a steady presence to bear witness – we will create a helpful space together that’s discreet, compassionate, and respectful.
My style as a therapist – how you’ll encounter me
In therapy style, I am a pluralist. This is a new approach from the UK. Research conclusively shows that many different ways of ‘doing’ therapy can be helpful – what really matters is a good, purposeful working relationship between you and your therapist. I am trained to follow what research shows to be the best conditions for effective therapy.
In our work, we can draw on exercises from different ways of doing therapy (e.g., talking, doing ‘homework’ between sessions, journaling, using music or imagery to explore, storytelling, as examples), and can offer you choice in how we work. Finding the most comfortable or intuitive ways for you to engage with therapy, ways that play to your skills and strengths, make it more likely to be helpful and successful. We can work together in person at PHuset, online, or mixing the two by prior agreement. Part of being a pluralistic therapist is striving to meet your preferences for sessions wherever possible.
Credentials and experience
My credentials and experience come from the UK, where I lived until 2024. I’m a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, and a Chartered Academic Psychologist with the British Psychological Society. Prior to moving into private practice, I gained over a decade of experience in education where I worked teaching psychology, counselling, and personal development. As such, I have a particularly deep understanding of the psychological pressures of student life, a time of great, weighty expectations. I remain an active researcher in the topics of love and connection in intimate relationships, and the philosophy of pluralism as applied to therapy.
Pricing
My pricing is as follows, for 50-minute sessions:
First session:
For all – 500kr
This reduced rate is an opportunity for us to meet and assess working together.
Continuing sessions:
Adults – 1,100kr
Students – 800kr
One-time sessions (Single Session Therapy):
90 minutes – 1,500kr.
This is a highly focused, problem-solving approach to therapy, for which I have received additional training. This may be an interim solution if you are waiting a long time for support through the public health system.
Concessions
I offer sliding scale pricing for those in difficult circumstances. Just be in touch about your needs, if you have affordability concerns. I can also put together a ‘package’ of sessions to meet your needs, if we identify that a particular number of sessions will be useful to you.
Be in touch
If curious, you are welcome to read more about my approach to working as a therapist at my own website. More importantly, I welcome you to be in touch on the box below if how I work sounds like it makes sense for you. Thank you, and I look forward to the possibility of connecting with you.
