Expatriates need psychotherapy too – Aarhus
At Psykologhuset ved Åen we are dedicated to reach people broadly, internationals too. We embrace the fact that human beings are diverse and that there are as many differences in needs, as there are similarities, be it culturally, ethnically or language wise. Both of our Aarhus branches are in the middle of the city, close to the river, and easily accessible via bicycle, bus or even car, with ample parking facilities nearby.
People who decide to venture abroad for studies, work or other, oftentimes do so to try to something different, to explore, learn new ways and be enriched by the wonderous variety that the world offers. Nevertheless, being abroad can present many challenges as well, and it is no wonder that people run into feeling lonely, estranged, targeted or excluded. They may even experience fatigue, lack of concentration, serious mood swings and even bodily distress symptoms. Mental anguish can ensue, and a lot of people experience periodic states of depression and anxiety.
The need for psychotherapy is just as great for expatriates, as it is for everyone else, yet it can be harder to find the right therapist. One hurdle is language barriers. Danes are known for their language skills. They usually get along well when abroad because they’ve been taught English since grade school.
It isn’t necessarily a problem finding an English-speaking psychotherapist in Denmark, but it can be difficult finding a native English-speaking psychotherapist. Psychotherapy isn’t about ordering food or conversing with a receptionist. The skills required in psychotherapy in order to create a lasting working relation and environment and reach a profound level of insight into the psyche and behavioral patterns in a client, are more pronounced.
At Psykologhuset ved Åen we make an extra effort to engage English-speaking therapists as well as Danish-speaking therapists, that we might help the many in need and accommodate people of different language-, cultural- and ethnic backgrounds.
Our three keywords of availability, contact and commitment are the same for an English-speaker as for a Danish-speaker. We want to be there when we are needed. Easy to find, easy to get into contact with. We want our clients to feel cared for the moment they decide to make contact. To feel that we are there. No robots, no AI, just us ready to listen. Lastly, we make sure to create therapies that matter. We spend extra time and effort ensuring that our clients are matched to the right therapist. We know that it takes effort for our clients to open up. The least we can do is to make sure they do so with the right therapist.
